密蘇里大學哥倫比亞分校成立于公元1839年，不但是美國密西西比河西岸的第一所公立大學（the first public university west of the Mississippi River）；也是美國前總統(tǒng)湯瑪士'杰佛遜（Thomas Jefferson）在路易斯安那州（Louisiana）建立的第一所公立學校。

密蘇里大學哥倫比亞分校，包含11個研究所學院（Graduate School）與專門學校（Professional Schools），共有20個學院，250個不同的科系，其中包括農(nóng)業(yè)、食品與自然資源學院（College of Agriculture, Food, and Nature Resource）；文理學院（College of Art and Science）；商學院（College of Business）；教育學院（College of Education）；工程學院（College of Engineering）；營養(yǎng)專門學院（School of Health Professions）；人類環(huán)境科學院（College of Human Environmental Sciences）；社工學院（School of Social Work）；新聞學院（School of Journalism）；楚門公共關系學院（Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs）；醫(yī)學院（School of Medicine）；法學院（School of Law）與護理專門學校（MU Sinclair School of Nursing）等。
