查普曼大學(xué)最早以Hesperian College的名字建立，并于1861年3月4日正式授課，其開課時(shí)間正好與Abraham Lincoln的首次就職典禮相重合。

1920年時(shí)，被洛杉磯市中心的California Christian College合并。Chapman University是橘子郡最大最負(fù)盛名的私立學(xué)校大學(xué)，是U.S. News and World Report評選出的西部地區(qū)頂級大學(xué)，排名第六。其共有八個(gè)學(xué)院：Dale E. Fowler School of Law，the Argyros School of Business and Economics，the School of Pharmacy，Dodge College of Film and Media Arts，the College of Educational Studies，the College of Performing Arts，the Schmid College of Science，and the Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences。

1934年，該機(jī)構(gòu)更名為查普曼，以紀(jì)念橘子郡（Orange，CA）的企業(yè)家和學(xué)校的創(chuàng)立者查普曼先生 。

1954年學(xué)院所在地遷至加利福尼亞州的orange的鬧市區(qū)。
