ZabriskieHouseLongySchoolofMusicofBardCollegeCambridge,MassachusettsLongySchoolofMusicofBardCollegeisaconservatorylocatednearHarvardSquareinCambridge,Massachusetts.Foundedin1915astheLongySchoolofMusic,itwasoneofthefourindependentdegree-grantingmusicschoolsintheBostonregionalongwiththeNewEnglandConservatory,BerkleeCollegeofMusic,andBostonConservatory.InJune2011,theschoolannouncedplanstomergewithBardCollege,andasofApril1,2012,theinstitutionofficiallybecameLongySchoolofMusicofBardCollege.[1]Asofthe2014–2015academicyear,theconservatoryhas248studentsinitsdegreeprogramsfrom35statesand24countries.
HistoryGardenStreetentranceLongySchoolofMusicwasfoundedinBostonin1915byGeorgesLongy,aFrench-bornoboistandgraduateoftheParisConservatorywhohadjoinedtheBostonSymphonyOrchestrain1898.Uponhisretirementin1925,hisdaughter,RenéeLongy-Miquelle,succeededhimasDirector.SherecruitedseveralofGeorgesLongy'sBostonSymphonycolleaguesasfacultymembersandestablishedDalcrozeEurhythmicsasanimportantpartofLongy'scurriculum.TheSchoolmovedacrosstheCharlesRivertoCambridgein1930,andin1937tookupresidenceinthestonemansionatOneFollenStreet,originallybuiltin1889byrailroadbaronEdwinHaleAbbot.[2]Duringthattime,LongyhadacloserelationshipwithHarvardandRadcliffecolleges.ManyofHarvard’smosttalentedmusicstudents,includingElliottCarterandDanielPinkham,crossedtheCambridgeCommontostudywithLongy’sperformancefaculty.Between1938and1944,thepedagogueandtheoreticianNadiaBoulangertaughtadvancedcoursesinharmony,compositionandcounterpointatLongyandestablishedatraditionoffocusonmusictheoryandcompositionthatcontinuestocharacterizetheschooltothepresentday.Theschool'sPreparatoryandContinuingStudiesprogram(part-timeprivatelessons,classes,andensemblesofferedtoarearesidents)hadevolvedfromitsbeginningsinthe1920swhenitbeganofferingclassesforchildren.In1978aSaturdayprogramoftheory,privatelessons,andothermusicclassesforchildrenwasadded.[3]RecentleadersoftheschoolincludeviolinistRomanTotenberg,Directorfrom1978to1985,pianistVictorRosenbaum,Directorfrom1985to2001,andKwang-WuKim,Presidentfrom2001to2006.Rosenbaum'stenureasDirectorsawtheestablishmentoftheoperaandmodernAmericanmusicdepartmentsaswellasagrowthinstudentnumbersfrom600to1,200,andintheannualbudgetfrom$600,000to$3.5million.[4]ThecurrentPresidentisKarenZorn,whotookupherpostin2007.[5]OnApril1,2010,theBostonGlobereportedthatLongywasinnegotiationstobecomeagraduateschoolofBardCollege.[6]PresidentZornbeganpreliminarytalkswithBard'spresident,LeonBotsteininJuly2009.Atthesametime,thefacultybeganaunionizationdrive,andinJanuary2010,therewasavoteof51to32infavorofformingaunion.[6]Threemonthslater,Longyannouncedastaffrestructuringwhichresultedin37ofits188teachers(allofwhomarepart-time)beinglaidoff.[6]InOctober2010,theGeneralCounseloftheNationalLaborRelationsBoardonbehalfoftheunionissuedaformalcomplaintagainstLongyforunfairlaborpractices.[7][8]InaJanuary2011interiminjunction,theUnitedStatesDistrictCourtfortheDistrictofMassachusettsruledthat"thereisreasonablecausetobelievethatLongyhascommittedanunfairlaborpractice".Whileacknowledging"Longy'sprerogativetopursuefacultyrestructuring",JudgePattiB.Sarisnotedinherdecisionthat"itdidhaveadutytobargainovertheeffectsofthisdecision",andorderedittodoso.Longywasalsoorderedtoreinstateterminatedfacultymemberswithpayuntilafinalsettlementwasreached,butwasnotrequiredtoreversejobreassignments.[9][10]FollowingnegotiationsbetweentheunionandtheadministrationinFebruary2011,asettlementandcollectivebargainingagreementwerereached,andtheunionofficiallyrequestedwithdrawalofallchargesfiledwiththeNationalLaborRelationsBoard.[11]ThemergerwithBardCollegebeganinJune2011,[12]andonApril1,2012,LongyofficiallybecamepartofBardCollegewithitsnamechangingto"LongySchoolofMusicofBardCollege".AMasterofArtsinTeachinginMusicdegreeprogram,locatedinLosAngeles,CaliforniaandbasedonthetenetsoftheVenezuelanmovementofsocialempowermentthroughmusiceducationknownasElSistema,wouldbethefirstjointventurebetweenthetwoschools.TheLosAngelesPhilharmonicisalsoapartnerintheMATprogram,withhands-onteachertrainingtakingplaceattheLAPhil'spremierElSistema-inspiredsite,HeartofLosAngeles(YOLA).[13]TheMasterofArtsinTeachinginMusicwascreatedinassociationwithTakeaStand[1],apartnershipbetweenLongy,Bard,andtheLAPhilthatwasformedtopromoteandsupporttheElSistema-inspiredmusiceducationmovementthroughouttheUS.InMarch2013,LongyannouncedthatitwoulddiscontinueitsprogramofPreparatoryandContinuingStudieseffectiveAugust31,2013inordertoexpandthepracticeandteachingspaceavailableforfull-timeconservatorystudents.[3]
FacilitiesTheRey-WaldsteinBuildingPickmanHallZabriskieHouseLongy'soriginalhomeinCambridgeistheEdwinAbbotHouse,awell-appointedlandmarkbuildingoriginallydesignedbyLongfellow,Alden,andHarlow.Asisthecasewiththefirm'sdesignsforCambridgeCityHall,thehouse'sextensiveRichardsoniandetailingandwindingopenstairrecalltwoofthepartners'previousworkintheofficeoflegendaryBostonarchitect,H.H.Richardson.[14]ThebuildingisontheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces.Thestructurenowholdsroomsforteaching,administration,performanceandpractice.FollowingtheconstructionofPickmanHallin1970(seebelow),Longybeganaprograminthe1990stoaddfacilitiesandrenovateexistingones.TheprogramincludedconstructionoftheBakalarMusicLibrary,whichopenedin1992;acquisitionandrestorationoftheRey-WaldsteinBuilding;andrenovationandexpansionoftheEdwardM.PickmanConcertHall.TheRey-WaldsteinBuildingIn1998,Longypurchasedanewbuildingat33GardenStreettoaddfurtherperformanceandpracticespaceaswellasclassroomsandoffices.Originallybuiltin1905andrenovatedbyLongyin2005,thehistoricstructureisnownamedinhonorofMargaretReyandH.A.Rey,thecreatorsofCuriousGeorgeandlongtimesupportersofLongy,andMargaretRey’sparents,FelixandGertrudeWaldstein.In2006theCambridgeHistoricalCommissionrecognizedLongywithaPreservationAwardforthequalityofitsrestorationandrenovation,designedbyWolfArchitectsofBoston.Inadditiontoprovidinguniversalaccessintothebuilding,Longyrestoredtheoriginalpolychromaticexterior,improvedthepublicspaces,and,amongotherrenovations,providedattractivenewloungespaceandpracticeroomsinthebasement.EdwardM.PickmanConcertHallTheEdwardM.PickmanConcertHall,builtin1970,isLongySchoolofMusicofBardCollege'sprimaryperformancespace.NamedinhonorofEdwardM.Pickman,PresidentoftheBoardofTrusteesfrom1955to1959,the300-seatbirch-linedhallprovidesasettingformasterclassesandbothsoloandchamberperformances.TheadditiontothehistoricAbbotHousewasdesignedbyHuygensandTappe.ItsjuxtapositionofabstractcontemporaryvolumesofbrickandstonewiththehistoricmasonryformsoftheAbbotHousehasbeenadmiredoverthedecadesasamodelcombinationofoldandnew.Thecompletionofarenovationin1993wasmarkedwithaconcertthatincludedtheworldpremiereofHowardFrazin'sAmidaCrowdofStars.[15]In2010,LongyundertookanotherroundofrenovationstofinetunetheHall'sacoustics,expandthelobby,andcreateanewentrancepavilion.Over250concertsnowtakeplaceinPickmanHalleachyear,manyofwhicharefreeandopentothepublic.[16]ProgramsofstudyThroughitsconservatory,LongySchoolofMusicofBardCollegeofferstwofour-yearundergraduateprograms:UndergraduateDiploma,andBachelorofMusicDegree(thelatterinconjunctionwithEmersonCollege).AtgraduateleveltheSchooloffersthreetwo-yearprograms:MasterofMusicDegree,GraduatePerformanceDiploma,andArtistDiploma(forexceptionallygiftedperformers).[17]
