薩塞克斯大學(xué)成立的最初目的是為了促進布萊頓市的發(fā)展。1911年的12月，在布萊頓的皇家展覽館召開了一個關(guān)于探討如何資助成立大學(xué)的公開會議，但這個計劃因第一次世界大戰(zhàn)的爆發(fā)而被迫停止，項目所籌集的基金則用在了市立?？茖W(xué)院教科書的采購。值得慶幸的是，在20世紀50年代這個計劃被重新提出，在1958年,政府批準自治委員會在布萊頓建校的提議成立，從誕生了第一間“平板玻璃大學(xué)”（在60年代成立的英國大學(xué)因為他們的建筑風(fēng)格而被稱為“平板玻璃”大學(xué)）。1959年間，薩塞克斯大學(xué)是以公司的模式構(gòu)建起來的，直到1961年8月16日獲得皇家特許權(quán)后，才逐漸發(fā)展成一個高等教育機構(gòu)。在獲準成立大學(xué)之后，薩塞克斯很快因其激進主義與自由主義而聞名。
