倫敦大學皇家霍洛威學院（Royal Holloway, University of London)于1879年在維多利亞女王的支持下由托馬斯?霍洛威（Thomas Holloway）籌資創(chuàng)立，女王本人于1886年授予其皇家特許狀并親自主持了開校典禮。1986年伊麗莎白二世女王又于該校100周年校慶之際主持了其與貝德福德學院（1849年成立）的合并典禮。皇家霍洛威學院于1900年加入倫敦大學，為倫敦大學最大的九個核心組成學院之一，也是倫敦大學選定專門進行科學教學與研究的五所學院之一，兼1994大學集團的成員。倫敦大學（University of London）于1836年由倫敦大學學院和倫敦國王學院合并而成，其建立初衷是為改變牛津劍橋壟斷英格蘭學術(shù)界的局面，完全照搬了劍橋大學的建校模式，至今已發(fā)展成為由18個獨立自治的學院和10個研究機構(gòu)聯(lián)合組成的聯(lián)邦制大學，其性質(zhì)類似美國的加州大學，旗下各個學院都是獨立的大學，獨立招生，獨立排名。
