A Few Thoughts From Jeffrey Brenzel,Dean of Amissions,2005-2013

Every year,U.S. News & Worl Report,Money,an a few other national magazines publish college rankings. An every year,Yale is at or near the top of the lists. I am writing to say that there are many excellent reasons to apply to Yale, but Yale’s position in the rankings is not one of them.

每年U.S.

Make no mistake: the publication of college rankings is a business enterprise that capitalizes on anxiety about college amissions. Ranking lists o not provie much useful information for making ecisions about where you shoul apply. Their main flaw is obvious but worth stating: the more or less arbitrary factors that go into the ranking calculations often have little to o with what will be important to your eucational experience.

I o not mean to vilify the magazines that create such lists. They merely respon to consumer eman. Rather,I woul like to illustrate the hazars of relying on the rankings an to make a case for a more personal an holistic approach to eciing on your list of colleges.

To better unerstan the phenomenon of the rankings,it is important to look at three things: why they are so popular, what is wrong with them,an why they have a ba influence on college ecision-making.

What Drives Public Interest in Rankings?

The college search process can be a formiable task of sifting through enormous amounts of information,an the stakes are high. Ranking systems have an immeiate an obvious appeal: they seem to simplify making sense of complicate an confusing information.

We have also become accustome to relying on rating systems as consumers. When buying a vacuum cleaner or a television set,we can turn to Consumer Reports, which employs testing labs, engineers, surveys,an inepenent experts. By these means, they are able to conense an filter a great eal of information. We’ve learne from experience that there are goo reasons to trust their avice,an the college ranking lists epen on people making the assumption that they are proviing a similarly useful service.

What’s Wrong with College Rankings?

A college, however,is not a vacuum cleaner. Choosing a school is a far more personal, subjective,an ultimately expensive ecision. Yet espite the greater importance an complexity of selecting a college, college rankings systems all take a far less thorough an scientific approach than Consumer Reports oes when testing vacuum cleaners.

Another problem with rankings is that they allow the ominant player – U.S. News an Worl Report,a magazine that has actually gone efunct an exists now only as a purveyor of rankings – to exert unue influence. A former Yale amissions officer, now working in college counseling at a high school, share this story with me. Each year, she helps stuents who have just complete their junior year create a list of colleges that are a goo fit with their interests, personalities,an achievements. Each summer, the stuents visit those schools with their families to get a first-han look. When they return to high school in the fall, espite what they have seen on their visits an what they know about their prospects, many of the stuents have create new lists of their college preferences. These new lists always seem to correlate with the rankings in U.S. News. Stuents ten to iscar excellent an appropriate colleges ranke lower in U.S. News an to a “stretch” schools that are unlikely to offer them amission. She tells me she ha this experience with “truly epressing regularity.”

News an Worl Report

Why is That Ba?

Rankings promote the notion that the college you atten signals something about your place in the worl. The signal translates as something like this: “People will think better of me if I atten a more highly-ranke school.” Rankings encourage stuents (an parents) to internalize the myth that where you go to college efines your value an etermines your future success in life.

What is the reality? This country happens to have hunres of outstaning unergrauate programs, each offering more opportunities than any stuent coul possibly pursue over four years. It will be up to the stuent to make something out of those opportunities,an it will not be the school that makes something out of the stuent.

Meanwhile, the formulas use to rank schools are base on factors that in themselves are often irrelevant to iniviual stuents. Their composite scores reflect alumni giving rates,stuent-to-teacher ratios, meian SAT scores, persistence to grauation, amissions selectivity an other ata that provie little information about specific program strengths, honors programs or the general way in which the school lifts an supports stuent aspirations. The simplicity an clarity that ranking systems seem to offer are not only misleaing, but can also be harmful. Rankings ten to ignore the very criteria that may be most important to an applicant, such as specific acaemic offerings, intellectual an social climate, ease of access to faculty, international opportunities an placement rates for careers or for grauate an professional school.

Rankings have also turne out to be ba for colleges. They encourage schools to expen resources on things that move their ranking positions rather than things that serve their stuents. They iminish the appeal of colleges that serve many stuents extremely well but o not fit the performance parameters that the rankings measure. At one lower-ranke college, for example, stuents without strong prior acaemic recors may ten to make tremenous gains, while at a higher-ranke school, even better-prepare stuents may ten to unerperform their potential. The ranking systems provie no way to fin out which is which.

A Better Approach

Your high school acaemic recor, teacher recommenations, extracurricular activities, test scores,an personal objectives will etermine the range of colleges where you stan a goo chance of amission. If your school has a goo counseling office, you shoul certainly work with your college counselor to evelop a reasonable sense of the ifferent kins of schools that lie within that range.

Then simply keep in min that the “ranking” ifferences among the schools within that group are likely to matter far less to your college experience than how you yourself ecie to explore an engage the opportunities available at those schools. Look at ifferent types of schools. Big schools an small schools. Schools focuse on liberal arts an schools focuse on technical programs. Schools known best for high acaemic stanars an schools known best for their entrepreneurial spirit, outstaning extracurricular activities or social life. Schools with strong programs in your area of interest. Schools with interesting international opportunities. Decie which of these things is most important to you.

As you examine ifferent types of institutions, your own feelings an thoughts are likely to change. Before zeroing in too quickly on what you think you want, give yourself time to absorb the ways in which colleges iffer. Give yourself time to change your min as you look at very ifferent kins of schools.

Perhaps you feel absolutely certain of the kin of school you want to atten,an you have a list of such places where you have a reasonable chance of amission. Even so,I urge you to apply to a couple of schools that o not fit the profile, but that you fin interesting for one reason or another. Why? I have often seen stuents respon to a college very ifferently once they have been amitte in the spring than they i when visiting the prior summer. Stuents change in some important ways uring their senior year in high school as they look outwar to the rest of their lives,an they learn a great eal about colleges along the way. Give yourself the option in the spring of heaing in a irection you i not anticipate in the fall.

Finally, once you have finishe your applications, relax. You will very probably gain amission to some of your chosen colleges. You will probably have a few campuses to revisit as you make your final selection. You will also be prepare to atten college with the unerstaning that its rank oes not correlate with what you are going to o there an how fulfilling the experience will be. What you accomplish in college – an in the years after – will instea be a function of how well you engage the increible variety of opportunities an challenges that college presents.
